A Potential Spike Sorting Algorithm

چکیده

This is a short summary of the work I did for 6 weeks as a summer intern with Conor Houghton. The topic of the internship was spike sorting, in particular to test an algorithm suggested by Dr.Houghton. I’ll first briefly describe spike sorting, at least my understanding of it. A few small biological details (which I’m sure are a simplification) a neuron fires ‘spikes’ of voltages; different types of neurons fire different spikes, but all of the spikes from any single neuron will be nearly identical. If we record the electrical activity in a part of the brain, we will get a signal that is composed of spikes from many different neurons. But what if we want to break this down into its component spikes, and identify which spikes come from which neurons? This is spike sorting. The problem is, given an arbitrary recording, we don’t know how many neurons are involved, or what their spikes look like.

Background: Studying the behavior of a society of neurons, extracting the communication mechanisms of brain with other tissues, finding treatment for some nervous system diseases and designing neuroprosthetic devices, require an algorithm to sort neuralspikes automatically. However, sorting neural spikes is a challenging task because of the low signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the spikes. The mai...

Spike Train Decoding Without Spike Sorting

We propose a novel paradigm for spike train decoding, which avoids entirely spike sorting based on waveform measurements. This paradigm directly uses the spike train collected at recording electrodes from thresholding the bandpassed voltage signal. Our approach is a paradigm, not an algorithm, since it can be used with any of the current decoding algorithms, such as population vector or likelih...

A Brief Look into Spike Sorting Methods

Spike sorting is a class of techniques used in the analysis of electrophysiological data. Studying the dynamics of neural activity via electrical recording relies on the ability to detect and sort neural spikes recorded from a number of neurons by the same electrode. This article reviews methods for detecting and classifying action potentials, a problem commonly referred to as spike sorting.

Spike sorting

Figure 1. Extracellular recordings and spike sorting. (A) The extracellular activity of neurons is recorded with microwires inserted in the brain. The spikes of neurons close-by the electrode tip (in red and blue) can be separated via spike sorting; neurons further away (in dark grey) can be detected but not sorted, thus generating the multiunit activity; more distant neurons (in light gray) co...

Validation of neural spike sorting algorithms without ground-truth information

BACKGROUND The throughput of electrophysiological recording is growing rapidly, allowing thousands of simultaneous channels, and there is a growing variety of spike sorting algorithms designed to extract neural firing events from such data. This creates an urgent need for standardized, automatic evaluation of the quality of neural units output by such algorithms. NEW METHOD We introduce a sui...

Automatic Spike Sorting Using Tuning Information

Current spike sorting methods focus on clustering neurons' characteristic spike waveforms. The resulting spike-sorted data are typically used to estimate how covariates of interest modulate the firing rates of neurons. However, when these covariates do modulate the firing rates, they provide information about spikes' identities, which thus far have been ignored for the purpose of spike sorting....
